THE
MOON BASE PROJECT
PHASE 1
The first phase of the Moon Base project is focused on achieving reliable access to the lunar surface and a better understanding of the terrain and environment. New technologies will be pioneered and tested by robotic missions to further explore the South Pole. In the process of expanding the knowledge and understanding of the lunar surface, NASA will identify potential locations for future infrastructure, improve capabilities, and reduce the risk well before the establishment of more permanent structures.
PHASE 2
Taking what's been learned in Phase One, NASA will build on that knowledge to begin deploying the first infrastructure necessary for long-term operations and habitation of the lunar surface. Establishing this early infrastructure will create a resilient foundation to support further exploration efforts and greater expansion of the Moon Base.
PHASE 3
Once the infrastructure had been put in place, NSA will work to create a permanent Moon Base on the surface where long-term missions can be centered from. Astronauts will be able to live and work in the base for extended periods thanks to habitats, power systems, communications, and other critical systems. As the Moon Base is expanded and improved, so too will the research able to be performed from it and exploration humanity is capable of.
